Rutherford & Cleveland Counties, NC – November 6th, 2025 — There’s never been a better time to get out and explore the Broad River. Thanks to a recent grant and the collaboration of many local partners, the Broad River Paddle Trail has a brand-new look — complete with a new website, expanded access points, and exciting improvements that make paddling in our region more enjoyable than ever.

The new website, www.BroadRiverPaddle.org, showcases the 55 miles of scenic waterways that flow through Rutherford and Cleveland counties. Visitors can find everything they need to plan their next adventure — from launch locations and trip suggestions to river safety tips and best practices for protecting our natural spaces.
In addition to the site launch, the trail now features five public access points, including two new sites with paved parking areas and sturdy staircases that make launching kayaks, canoes, and paddleboards more convenient and accessible for everyone.
New information kiosks are also on the way for each access point, offering maps, trip details, and QR codes that connect directly to the website for real-time updates.

“This river had the worst access of any river in Western North Carolina,” said Jerry Stensland, Executive Director of the Rutherford Outdoor Coalition. “It has taken more than 10 years of work with the support of many partners and funders but our Broad River has finally blossomed into a regional recreation asset that is welcoming to paddlers from near and far...”

MountainTrue’s Broad Riverkeeper has been a vital partner in this transformation, working to ensure the river remains healthy and accessible for generations to come.
“MountainTrue’s Broad Riverkeeper has for years and will continue to work with Rutherford Outdoor Coalition to keep these waters safe and clean for fishing, swimming, drinking, and paddling,” said Riverkeeper David Caldwell. “We host regular volunteer cleanup days on the river and guide fun outings for the public. Contact either organization for more details.”
The progress reflects a strong spirit of collaboration among local organizations, landowners, and volunteers working together to protect, promote, and enjoy this natural treasure.
